The purpose of the presentation is to give you an opportunity to become a better researcher and a more confident speaker. Your presentation should be approximately 15 minutes total, including questions from the audience.
Due to the remote teaching this presentation can be done 1 of 2 ways: 1. You can record a voice-over on your slides. 2. You can write a paper that would be your “script”. After thinking about it, I don’t think a Zoom presentation will work very well since the recording would grab the whole class along with the presentation. |
You may choose to discuss the economics of an industry or a country. You are required to use at least one audio or visual aid to enhance your presentation. I strongly recommend that you use PowerPoint or Prezi slides, or a similar presentation format, as your audio/visual aid. This keeps you organized and allows the audience to follow your presentation more effectively. Do not read entire sentences directly from your notes or your slides. |
Presentations will be held on the days indicated in our modules. Each of the indicated days will have a maximum of two presentations. During our first few weeks, I will give you a chance to sign up for a date (see the corresponding folder; first come, first serve). |
Take notes during the presentations of your classmates. You will be asked to write a summary and an analysis of four of the presentations (see the link in Module 5). |
Components of an industry/country presentation
Your presentation should include the following:
If you are researching an industry: | If you are researching a country: | |
1. | A brief description (including a short history) of the product and the industry, and the reason why you chose to cover this industry. | Pictures and a general description (including its location, size, population, type of government), and the reason why you are covering this country. Keep this brief. |
2. | An overview of all the companies and the nature their competition. Provide detailed information of the biggest companies in the industry. | An overview of the most important industries and trade partners of the country. This can be brief also. |
3. | Profitability and the economic health of the industry. Provide an economic analysis. Do not merely list statistics without describing the significance of them. For example, if you mention that the industry’s profits increased by an average of 12% since 2004, then you should describe what you think caused this increase in profits. If you need assistance with the analysis, please feel free to contact me. | The standard of living of the country (real or purchasing power parity GDP, unemployment, inflation, income inequality and poverty). Provide an economic analysis. Do not merely list statistics without describing the significance of them. For example, if you mention that the country’s poverty rate decreased last year, then you should describe what you think caused this decrease. If you need assistance with your analysis, please feel free to contact me. I also recommend that you make statistical comparisons with well-known countries. |
4. | Issues particular to this industry, such as regulation, deregulation, anti-trust, foreign competition and protectionism, environmental, technology, government involvement, negative or positive externalities, national security, or consumer issues. Include an economic analysis. You don’t have time to analyze all of the issues; select one or at most two significant ones. | Anything typical (economic) of this country not already included in items 1-3, such as its level of protectionism, the degree of government involvement in the economy, the amount of government or other corruption and its effect on the economy, the educational system and its effect on the economy, the effects of climate, religion, etc. on its economy, |
